Volkswagen strikes from early December ‘necessary’, union says

BERLIN (Reuters) -Strikes at Volkswagen from early December are “possible and also necessary”, the IG Metall union said in a pamphlet on Friday as labour and management clash over the future of the carmaker’s German operations.

An agreement not to hold strikes ended on November 30. “Accordingly, strikes are possible and also necessary from the beginning of December,” the union said.

“Volkswagen will determine at the negotiating table how long and how hard the conflict will be – the VW workforce throughout the country is ready to strike,” it added.

The strikes, which could escalate into 24-hour or unlimited strikes if a deal is not struck in the next round of wage negotiations, will put a dent in Volkswagen’s output at a time when the carmaker is already facing declining deliveries and plunging profits.
