A driver crashed his pickup truck into a New Year’s crowd in New Orleans’ French Quarter early Wednesday, killing 10 people and injuring over 35, in what the FBI is investigating as a potential act of terrorism.
The attack occurred around 3:15 a.m. at the intersection of Canal and Bourbon Streets, a bustling tourist hub known for its nightlife. According to Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick, the driver swerved around barricades before crashing and opening fire on police. “This man was intent on causing carnage,” Kirkpatrick said at a press briefing. The suspect was killed in a shootout with police, and two officers sustained injuries, though they are in stable condition.
Among those hurt in the attack were two Israeli citizens, the Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed. The ministry and Israel’s Consulate General in Houston are in contact with the victims’ families and the hospital. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has instructed a consular representative to travel to New Orleans to assist.
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell labeled the incident a “terrorist attack,” a sentiment echoed by the FBI, which reported the discovery of a suspected improvised explosive device. The suspect’s identity and motive remain under investigation.
The attack comes as New Orleans prepares for high-profile events, including the Sugar Bowl college football game and the NFL Super Bowl in February. President Joe Biden offered federal support while local and federal law enforcement agencies collaborated on the investigation. Governor Jeff Landry urged the public to avoid the area, calling the attack a “horrific act of violence.” Injured victims were rushed to multiple hospitals as authorities secured the French Quarter.
