PARAMARIBO (Reuters) – Suriname’s Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin on Friday said he had summoned the ambassador of neighboring Guyana to protest plans by the government in Georgetown to build an airstrip in the Tigri Area, as well as a school in Surinamese territory.
The presence of Guyanese in the Tigri Area – a region also known as the New River Triangle which the two countries dispute control over – violates agreements made in 1970, Ramdin said.
Guyana’s government did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
