Netanyahu’s Second Visit To Meet President Trump in Works; On the Table: Tariffs, Iran and Hostages

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to visit the White House on Monday to discuss a new tariff policy announced by US President Donald Trump, according to three Israeli officials and a White House source. This impromptu, in-person meeting could mark the first time a foreign leader has met with Trump to negotiate a deal aimed at removing tariffs. 

The meeting reportedly emerged after a surprise phone call on Thursday between Trump and Netanyahu, who is currently visiting Hungary. During the call, Netanyahu raised concerns over Trump’s recent tariff announcement, which imposes a 17% duty on unspecified Israeli goods exported to the United States. The US remains Israel’s closest ally and largest trading partner. 

In addition to tariff discussions, the meeting is expected to cover issues related to Iran and Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas in Gaza, though Netanyahu’s office has yet to confirm the details of the visit. 

The new tariff policy has caused concern among Israeli finance officials, who warn it could impact exports of machinery and medical equipment. This announcement comes just days after Israel moved to cancel its remaining tariffs on US imports, following a free trade agreement signed 40 years ago that has rendered about 98% of US goods tax-free.
