Biden, Netanyahu to Discuss Iran and Regional Conflicts in First Talks Since August

US President Joe Biden is expected to hold a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, during which they will discuss Israel’s potential plans for retaliating against Iran following last week’s missile attack. The missile strike, which Iran carried out in response to Israeli military actions in Lebanon, did not result in any casualties, though it has heightened tensions across the Middle East.

Netanyahu has vowed that Iran would pay for its missile strike, while Tehran has warned that any Israeli retaliation will lead to widespread destruction, raising concerns about a broader regional war that could draw in the US.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, Israel’s retaliation strategy will be a key topic in the talks, with Washington hoping to weigh in on the appropriateness of Israel’s response. The White House has yet to comment on the planned call.

President Biden has publicly weighed alternatives to striking Iran’s oil fields but said last week that he would not support an Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear sites. Biden and Netanyahu are also expected to discuss the ongoing conflicts with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon amid US calls for Israel to consider cease-fire agreements.
